Hardbanding Solutions by Postle Industries has been a leader in drilling component wear protection for over a decade with our Duraband®NC, Tuffband®NC and Ultraband™NM products. In an effort to keep you current with the latest on Postle products, procedures, application tips and industry changes, we started a monthly newsletter called the HBS Bulletin in March of 2018. - Why do some hardbands crack? Some wires are designed to crack for the purpose of stress relief, but definitely not in oilfield applications. Cracked hardbanding on drill pipe can cause accelerated casing wear. Re-applying hardbanding is significantly more expensive because the previous layer of cracked hardbanding must be ground off before re-application. - Virtually all hardbanding degrades with each re-application and at some point the inevitable expense of rebuilding the tool joint is incurred. This is not the case with Duraband®NC. - Unexpected expenses can accrue when stacking rigs. Restoring pipe to DS-1 condition often incurs the expense of removing the previous hardbanding and reapplication of new hardbanding. In worst case scenarios the pipe may be scrapped all together, unless you're using Duraband®NC. Duraband can be reapplied over itself and other hardbanding without prior hardbanding removal. - In tough economic times, reducing costs by working efficiently and saving on material costs is of paramount importance. Duraband®NC, with Niobium carbide, helps you do just that. Given two hardbanding products with a hardness of 60 Rockwell C, adding Niobium carbide to one will make it wear approximately 3 times longer, even though both products are the same hardness.
